This is a restaurant that I like to patron because not only is the food tasty and the service has been consistently good, but they are active in the community and host fundraisers. This is definitely an example of a place known for burgers & steak, but a vegetarian can leave feeling satisfied.

I had the pork chops with steamed vegetables along with a side salad. It was a pretty typical steak house meal. The croutons for the salad were completely generic and overall the salad was bland. The veggies were steamed until they were mush. Chops were done well. My server was nice and pleasant and prompt.

We ate here on a Thursday night back in march when we stopped in Van Buren on a Thursday night during a cross country road trip. Ambiance is that of your typical small town roadhouse. Food and service is meh. This place is on the high end of 2 stars, but for being open past 8 pm and that full sized taxidermied cow in the corner I'll push it to 3 stars.

I went there with my family a few days ago for the first time and I was pretty impressed. The decor is fantastic, food was great, and service was great. I got the chicken sandwich and fries from the lunch specials and the sandwich was so big! And I usually don't like French fries at restaurants but these fries were delicious!

Stopped in with three co-workers, tired, on our way home from a conference. The atmosphere is strait up steak house, complete with a toy train running around the dining room. The food was good, and portions were large, and the prices were good for the amount of food that you get. The service was less than stellar, with several wait staff running around a half full dining room, but no one was concerned with refills or taking away empty plates.

More like a 2.5. I've grown up eating at this place and watched it go from awesome to bad and everywhere in between. When it's good, it's good, and when it's not, it's not. It's been completely hit or miss the last half a dozen times or so that I've been. I like the beans and bread. The ribs are usually a safe/consistent bet. Aside from that, I honestly can't recommend anything specific because of the inconsistency of the food and service here. Overall, it's worth trying as long as you keep in mind that it's nothing high-end or spectacular as far as steakhouses go.

I was just coming back from Little Rock when I decided I would stop here and try this restaurant. When I walked in, there were few people, but some at the bar. I had the flaming queso, thinking it might be spicy. When they brought it, they asked me if i wanted it lit on fire. Yes, you read that right. They set your queso on fire! I was amazed. I had the 12oz sirloin steak with fries and sautéed mushrooms. The steak was absolutely wonderful. The fries were exactly how I love them. The mushrooms needed salt but we're good otherwise. I tried a bite of the New York strip, too. It was the most tender thing I had tasted ever! It was delicious and tender. The service was good, too. The decor is country western. There are many western movie posters, along with deer heads and a full cow. I recommend this place for any kind of occasion. I strongly suggest to anyone looking for a good steak, take the New York strip steak. The prices are reasonable, too.

At first I wondered about the food since they had their event smoker for sale in the parking lot... The girl that waited on us was nice but seemed disinterested - she didn't ask how I wanted my burger cooked, she didn't know Sam Adams 'Seasonal' beer was all they had for Sam Adams beer, she at least got the unsweetened bit about the ice tea, but when say No Lemon it would be nice enough if she listened. The food was okay, my husband enjoyed his steak. But if if I pass through again, I'll probably try another place. At least they have Horse Parking out back!

I stopped here with my dad while traveling across the county. While this was not the best food I ate on my pilgrimage it certainly wasn't the worst. I totally, non-chain, one off establishment. 80's-esque, mid-west, steakhouse that boasts a John Wayne laden decor. Several taxidermied heads stare at you while an electric chain goes round and round while you dine. Mid grade beers are available. Fat tire being the best beer on the menu. All and all the food seemed pretty average to mediocre. The charm lies in the service. Kiera ( or kiara?), was a absolutely adorable and charming. A short-haired, brunette with a cute southern accent. I would definitely give two stars if it wasn't for her. Not only did she give us good service but to other tables as well. FYI...was recommended by the local hotel guy.

Steak was cooked properly but absolutely flavorless. After a few shakes of salt and pepper mixed with a healthy dose of A-1 it was finally edible. I can't help but wonder if there is just a tub of warm water in the back just chock full of steaks just waiting to order. Loaded mashed potatoes were luke warm at best and the steamed veggies were not completely done. The wait staff was friendly and attentive but man that's where the buck stops. Take my advice, if your in the mood for steak, don't stop here.

There might have been 4 tables in the place. It took 30 minutes to get our food. When we got it it was cold. Server seem to spend more time specializing in the back than taking care of customers. The only time our server was even halfway nice was when she dropped the check. Food was mediocre at best.

Not a bad steak for a small town. The mushrooms were a nice addition, but the other sides were pretty average. The ranch style beans were tasty and mini loaf of bread kept us occupied until dinner arrived. The atmosphere is cowboy casual with lots of wood and western ambiance including a life size steer. The service was prompt.

Love it all! Food is sooooo good! Prices are excellent for the amount of food you get! Big helpings and platefuls! Very family friendly live music Friday and Saturday nights. Cowboy beans (pintos) come with home made Wheat bread to the table as a free starter. Steaks are 5-star, tender and flavorful! Country fried chicken was moist and tender and so good with country gravy! Decor is a John Wayne lovers dream! Great old west decor, kids will love it! Servers are very friendly and give excellent service! Our drinks were never empty! Dessert menu looked good, but we were so full from all the good food, we couldn't fit anymore in our bellies! Only regret is that we won't be back tomorrow night for another meal because we are passing through to visit family in Oklahoma.

We enjoy eating at Jake's because the food quality is so good. Sadly, he customer service leaves a lot to be desired. It is hit or miss CID we get a good waitress or not. When we do, service is great. When we don't, we have to refill our own drinks.

the decor is great but that is about it. Matt who seated us was also the waiter, the bus boy plus a slew of other jobs. He had no wait staff experience but had a heart to help out. The food is not good. The pinto beans which come free with all meals is bland no taste what so ever, the bread well...I have had better store bought bread. There is no taste plus they do not have any butter they give you margarine with the bread which clots the arteries. The petite sirloin I ordered was suppose to be 6 oz but was very very tiny and just okay not great about it. I near fell off my chair when 'Matt' the jack of all trades asked if I wanted steak sauce which is a no no. If a steak is cooked good, their is no need for steak sauce. Also I was not even done eating when Matt asked if I wanted dessert and asked if he could bring my check. Matt has a great heart but the place needs experienced wait staff and better cooks. The atmosphere was great and the music - avoid place food no good.

Steaks were cooked to perfection (many places just won't serve medium rare or they serve medium and call it medium rare), and the onion rings were truly the best we have ever eaten. For the onion rings, the onions were cooked just right (not too raw and now too mushy), batter was seasoned very well and they were wonderfully crunchy. Server was friendly and attentive. Western-themed atmosphere with keg of roasted peanuts at the door and shells all over the floor - down home great. Scoot your boots on over. We'll be back.

Me and the family ate here last night after a day of mining for diamonds. Me and the wife had the Rib-eye steak, cooked just right the only issue was it was a little light on the salt. Garlic mashed, top notch. The sister in-law had the chicken, she said it was really good. Mother in-law had the cat fish she said it was also very good. The meal comes with beans and bread, the beans were good after we added salt, also they could have used more bacon. The bread, I can only guess it was good because I never got any. The salad, was very good and it had the type of ranch I like.

On a road trip from Oklahoma City to the Arkansas border, I was advised by the ladies at the travel center/rest stop to try out Big Jake's. Being that it was just one exit down, that sounded like a good plan to me. It was easy to find off the freeway - being a gigantic barn-like structure. I didn't know if they were open, since there were no cars in the parking lot, but it filled up quite a bit by the time I'd left. Upon entering, you can grab a cup full of peanuts from the barrels placed at each side of the dining room entrance. No fret about a mess, you crack he shells and wipe them onto the floor. Bill Clinton is a friend of the owner and photos of him are displayed around the restaurant. I preferred posing by their life sized bull. With everything on the menu looking good (except the collard greens) I ordered a half chop salad with chicken, because the waitress said it was big. I also ordered corn bread. She wasn't kidding about the size! The salad was way more than enough food. The corn bread muffins and real butter were wonderful too. After eating, I took a tour of the upstairs. It's a balcony that wraps around the dining room with seating. I'm told it's what they usually use for receptions. There's also some video games for the kiddo's. Doubtful I will be back any time soon, but this restaurant comes highly rated - by me - for anyone on a road trip and hungry for large portions of good, southern food.

Maybe I was expecting too much, but this place was a total let down. Terrible ambiance as well. I've gotten better BBQ for half the price.

Ate there for lunch today and other than the good looking waitresses, i wont be back. Fries were dry and cornbread was too. Had the catfish as it was only 9.99 and i was with a rep of mine and customers. The fish wasn't bad, the service was good. Thinking i should've ordered a steak.

The steaks were "ok" if I may say. Ocroding to one of the emmployes, they cut thier own meat. All of the employees wear cowboy boots and the resturant is decorated with John Wayne and a western theme. On top of that, the service was great. Our drinks were never empty and our food was out in a timely manner.

I stopped at the Motel 6 in Van Buren after having driven in from N.M. this morning and the front desk recommended Big Jakes over the KFC or other fast food places within walking distance of my room. I was quite amused when I walked in and beheld the cowboy-oriented theme restaurant honoring The Duke, John Wayne. I mean, there was memorabilia everywhere ...mounted deer heads, a full-sized wagon, pictures of The Duke (the televisions were showing John Wayne movies).. even the waitresses were wearing cowboy boots albeit sans spurs! My waitress was a very charming woman named Katie who took my order promptly and apologized for not bringing me my iced tea quickly. Jeez Katie! It wasn't like I was the only one siting in your section! More about her later. I ordered the Big Jake's Combo Plate in which you can order to main entrees (I got the Ribs and Grilled Shrimp) along with a House Salad, Bread, Pinto Bean Soup and a selection of one side (I got the Okra). The Pinto Bean Soup was good, I would have liked to taste some smoke in it. The salad, alas, is what I have come to expect in most restaurant in the South..Romaine/Iceberg lettuce. It came with Ranch Dressing and a small, hard, cherry tomatoe. The entree was huge! A big slab of ribs which were cooked til the meat fell off. I didn't get a big hit of the smoke flavor as I do with other BBQ houses but I liked it alright. The grilled shrimp were perfectly cooked and the okra was good. All this for $15.99 was well-worth it. No room for dessert! Now, back to Katie. I watched her work and she is truly the epitome of a great waitress. She was very polite, friendly and efficient, all while having to run back and forth in those cowboy boots. I asked her if she enjoyed wearing them and she said 'no'. The owner, James Garner (not the actor) suggested the staff wear them about a year ago. I asked if he wore cowboy boots and again she replied 'no'. Mr. Garner, put on your boots and walk around your place for eight hours and then see how you feel. Katie, thank you for your service, I would come back just for that. And I enjoyed the ambiance of Big Jake's Cattle Co. I think the food is far superior to what the cowboys got on the Chisolm Trail!

I ate here the first night I stayed in this area. I can't say much for the service. It wasn't very good. However, the ribs were outstanding. They fell off the bone, and were perfectly seasoned. Too bad Big Jake's is in a dry county. A beer would have been great.

Interesting decor, John Wayne shows playing on screens on the wall. All the food was sub-par for a steakhouse, but it was cheap. Beans didn't have much flavor, bread was too chewy and didn't have a good home-baked flavor (but the whipped butter was great), salad was just iceberg, cheapo croutons, and not-special dressing. Ribs were very tender, but way overcooked, steak was cooked right, but un-seasoned and pretty tough. Overall, a pretty big disappointment.

I am a local and I have grown up in this town (albeit I moved away but I came back) and have eaten at Big Jakes countless times, however, I felt the need to add my input on the restaurant. Big Jakes is NOT a restaurant you go to if you want something high end and mouth watering. Big Jakes is good if you just want to get out of the house and are feeling the need to connect to your country roots. There is a train that runs around the main dining floor up high (between the first and second balcony level) and our 2 year old LOVES it! However, I've watched it literally lose steam over the years and the only thing left running the track is the engine. Sort of sad. I would suggest investing in a new train. The beans don't have much flavor (salt would add some level of depth to them) and the bread is usually not warm and also lacks something homey that you would expect from a country kitchen. I've noticed a trend over the years of young, curvy girls working as servers and can count on one hand how many males or older women I've seen working there. It's almost like a dumbed down version of Hooters. But, you can't beat the lunch deal $2.99 for a burger, fries and drink with free refills (of course dine in only), and $3.99 if you prefer a chicken sandwich over the burger. Of course, it's the kind of place where you eat the peanuts out of the pale and toss the shells in the floor...we have a fairly clean home so it's good to be able to be messy and know that it's allowed and someone else will clean it up! If you stop in, enjoy yourself, look at all the old things hanging from the walls and flirt with your waitress for optimal service and you'll like Big Jakes just fine. :)

Let's be honest. One of the biggest perks of Jake's is that there is a full bar in Crawford County. It doesn't happen often. The food itself is good. I've enjoyed every meal we've had there. The beans that come to the table a really salty, but I don't like salt so this might be a matter of personal taste. The service is always great and friendly and I have enjoyed myself every time I've gone in.
